While the snowfall is expected to be most prominent in the foothills near the Rockies and the Mountain Parks, both Airdrie and Calgary, as well as the QEII corridor between Edmonton and Calgary, may see anywhere from two to five centimetres of snow, though Christy Climenhaga with Environment and Climate Change Canada noted that the predictions are tending towards the lesser accumulation of snow for Airdrie.
"Once you start getting into that first snowfall of the season, the roads are slippery. It can be a little slow going, but we can see a little more difficulty in our commute," she said. "I think budgeting a little extra time on Monday, maybe even Tuesday morning and Monday home from work, is not a bad idea because things may be a little slow going."
While historically, October's average snowfall for the area is between 10 and 15 centimetres, typically at the beginning of the month, Climenhaga underlined that last year's first snowfall was also late. But it appears that the first snowfall we can expect in the next few days will be average.
"The average first snowfall is about two centimetres or more," Climenhaga added. "There’s a chance for more snowfall as we approach the end of the month. However, it’s hard to predict how much we will receive."
Forecasts for Halloween remain uncertain, with models still unclear about what trick-r'-treaters can expect.
"Just yesterday, it looked like it would be much warmer than normal for Halloween, but now it’s shifting cooler. It's too early to say, but it might be wise to have snow gear handy."
Airdrie is expected to see daytime highs between 18 degrees and 10 degrees over the weekend, with nighttime lows hovering between five and minus one. Snow is currently forecast for Monday.
