When Cochranites go to the polls in October 2025, they'll be electing two school trustees for the Rocky View School Division (RVS).

Yesterday, the Rocky View Schools (RVS) board of trustees voted 5-3 in favour of an option that doubles Cochrane's representation (Ward 6) while maintaining an eight-member board.

The decision to include a second representative for Cochrane was in response to its rapidly growing population.

Airdrie (Ward 3) will have three trustees and Chestermere (Ward One) will have one.

Langdon, Indus and Chestermere rural areas (Ward 2) will share one trustee, as will Crossfield, Beiseker, Irricana, Kathyrn, and Airdrie rural areas (Ward 4). Ward 5 is west rural, representing Bragg Creek, Springbank, Bearspaw, Westbrook, and Cochrane rural.

School Trustee Norma Lang brought forward an unsuccessful substitute motion to seek approval from Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides to explore the feasibility of Airdrie forming a separate school division.

A ward boundary review was launched in 2023 in response to a population increase of 32 per cent within RVS communities since 2016. Extensive consultation was undertaken before the four options were presented to the board on Sept. 19 in advance of yesterday's decision.
