Orval “Corky” Dagenais
March 27, 1934 - October 14, 2024
With great sadness, the family of Orval "Corky" Dagenais of Calgary, AB, announces the sudden passing of their beloved husband, dad and grandpa on Monday, October 14, 2024.
Orval was born on March 27, 1934, in Humboldt, SK. He grew up in the Humboldt area and married the love of his life, Rita Kohle, in December 1956. Together, they raised five children while Orval built a long career in the grain industry with Humboldt Flour Mills. Throughout their life, Mom and Dad formed many lasting friendships and traveled extensively around the world.
Shortly after retiring in 1998, they moved to Calgary, AB, where they developed new friendships that became like family to him in his later years. Dad would often be found sitting on the front porch, surveilling the neighborhood and greeting everyone who passed by. There would always be one last look out to the street before he went to bed. The neighbourhood was in good hands on his watch always. He truly cherished these connections.
Orval was predeceased by his third son, James; his parents Earl and Myrtle; his brothers Russell (Magdalen), Ken (Eileen), and Mel (Nora); and his sister Diane (Armand) Dodd. He is survived by his wife, Rita; his son Glenn (Heather) of Calgary, AB; his son Murray (Nola) of Lloydminster, SK; his daughter Beverly (Robert) Dougall of Moose Jaw, SK; his daughter-in-law Caron (James) of Saskatoon, SK; and his son Robert (Catherine) of Kelowna, BC. Additionally, Orval leaves behind nine grandchildren: Matthew, Breanna (Darrell) Grassl, Cameron (Amber), Mitchell (Shelby) Dougall, Carson (Katrina) Dougall, Connor, Ryan, Caitlin, and Mason; and eight great-grandchildren: Garrett, Andrew, Marley, Charles, Jackson, Gavin, Adalyn, and James. He is also survived by his brothers Doug (Veronica) and Barry (Marilyn), and his sisters-in-law Magdalen (Russell), Eileen (Ken), and Nora (Mel).
He will be remembered for his humor and sharp wit and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. It was a wonderful journey, though it ended far too soon.
A mass of Christian burial will be held at 11am at St. Luke’s Catholic Church (1566 Northmount Drive NW, Calgary, AB) on Thursday, October 24, 2024. The family plans to livestream the funeral service through a link that can be found on the Eden Brook Funeral Home website.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that a donation be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
