Saturday was the grand return of 100 Kids Who Care Airdrie, who held their first event since before COVID-19.
Around 30 kids attended the event, donating a total of $300 to the Strong Like Sloane Foundation. The funds will be used for treatment and research for hard-to-treat and high-relapse-rate cancers.
Kelly Boudreau, the outgoing founder of 100 Kids Who Care Airdrie, talked about how the event went.
"We had it at Lift Youth Fitness on the north edge of town there, and it was wonderful. The kids got to run around in the gym, and we built some great fellowship."
She does hope they can get closer to the 100-kid attendance number at future events.
She stated that 100 Kids Who Care is in the same realm to like 100 Men Who Give a Damn Airdrie and 100 Women Who Care Airdrie, Kids bring $10 (they are encouraged to earn the money rather than the parents just giving it to them) and they pick who to donate the funds to.
"We're planning for at least three meetings a year, maybe four. The next will hopefully happen in February; a date has not been set yet."
Boudreau also shared that events like this are a great space for kids to learn more about charitable giving, public speaking, presentations and voting.
"Everybody was excited and impressed with the kids and their speaking abilities."
100 Kids Who Care started in 2016, was revived in 2019 before COVID shut it down, and now it is looking to make a difference in the community again.
Boudreau also mentioned with the first event now under their belt, she will be taking a step back for Tara Pickford and Abe Mawoyo to run the group along with several high schoolers.
