High River Mayor Craig Snodgrass has revealed some new amenities planned for the expanded Aquatic Centre at the Bob Snodgrass Recreational Complex.

The expansion has been in the works for about six years with the construction currently in progress and expected to be completed in 2026.

One of the main attributes of the pool is the fact that it's designed to be a "zero entry" pool, meaning visitors will be able to walk right in as the ground eventually slopes down rather than having to enter via a ladder.

"We are also making it a fun area for kids and everybody else. There is going to be a waterslide, a new hot tub, a spray park area, and there is also a smaller lane pool," Mayor Snodgrass explained.

Construction has started at the Bob Snodgrass Rec Plex for the pool expansion.

On top of that, some other additions that are coming to the facility include new change rooms, proper Zamboni access to the smaller rink, a whole new mechanical room, a new viewing area for the waiting pool, a new reception desk, and renovation to the lobby area that will include a kids play area.

"We are getting criticized that some people don't like it because they feel this pool is just for the kids. Well sorry, you are right. It isn't just for the kids though, it's for everyone in High River. Because somebody won't use it, that doesn't stop us from moving forward in High River. When we are done this is going to be a fantastic addition for High River to provide year-long access to a fun environment with aquatics that is not just for High River, but for all of us and our surrounding communities, " he added.

Snodgrass also hopes to see the aquatic centre function as a venue for events, such as a youth night.

The town has seen some backlash from some of the community members who have concerns with the expansion and have filled out a petition. He said that town council will discuss at their Monday (Oct. 28) meeting.
