The RCMP's annual youth road safety campaign, 'Our Future Roads,' which targets those between 15 to 24, emphasizes empowering young people to engage in discussions about road safety in their communities.

"Road crashes are the third-leading cause of death among young people aged 15 to 24 in Canada; for this reason, it is vital to ensure youth are part of the safety conversation," RCMP added.

The Alberta RCMP encourages residents to voice concerns about specific local issues, such as poorly lit roadways, busy intersections that need traffic calming measures, and areas lacking bike lanes for safer cycling.

"Youth use many modes of transportation, from driving to cycling, and even public transit," states Sgt. Darrin Turnbull of Alberta RCMP Traffic. "It’s important that they feel heard regarding issues in their communities that relate to their safety. Together, we can help ensure that everyone feels safe when commuting, no matter their mode of transportation."

But since road safety is a two-way street, so to speak, and as daylight hours wane in the fall, visibility and driving conditions can be affected. Therefore, both drivers and pedestrians are reminded to practice caution.

Drivers should be vigilant in school zones, never pass stopped vehicles at crosswalks, and ensure pedestrians have cleared the area before proceeding. Pedestrians are advised to use marked crosswalks, wear high-visibility clothing in low light, and walk facing traffic when sidewalks aren't available.
