Rocky View Schools (RVS) has installed stop-arm cameras on several school buses operating in Chestermere, Cochrane, and rural Rocky View County to improve student safety and raise awareness about road safety.
These cameras are designed to capture the license plates of vehicles that illegally pass stopped school buses while the stop arm is extended. Video footage of these violations may be shared with law enforcement for follow-up, reinforcing the importance of adhering to school bus safety laws.
RVS' transportation earlier this month reported on the installation of the cameras and noted that it continues to face a shortage of bus drivers, leading to delays in some routes. Parents are encouraged to monitor the Bus Status App for updates on late buses. Despite the challenges, RVS said contractors are working diligently to maintain timely service.
Also, earlier this month, the school division announced that news graphics outlining expected behaviour and volume levels would now be displayed on buses as part of their emphasis on 'positive bus behaviour' for a safe ride.
"School buses are an extension of the classroom," said Superintendent Greg Luterbach previously. "With over 13,000 students using buses daily, and many more on field trips, RVS is aligning bus expectations with the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) system, already familiar to students. This proactive approach fosters positive, safe, and equitable environments."
