Southeast Advocates is hosting an international friendship potluck this Saturday, October 26th at the Calvary Baptist Church, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Settlement Advisor for the Southeast Advocates in Weyburn, Helen Crocombe, invites the community to participate.
“With the help of Doug Loden, we have arranged an international potluck, which is to help newcomers to the area, and to involve anybody that wants to be involved. Just to come along, introduce yourself, try food from other people's countries.”
Crocombe says the event promotes social skills for newcomers to the area, as they can often feel very isolated.
“It's another introduction to say hi and to let people be aware of what is a national dish, for instance, in their country.”
Another important part of the event is understanding and immersion in other cultures.
“I believe that education means a lot in the world and I believe that it's really good to know that other people do things in different ways and I just think it's really interesting and it's given me an awful lot of different dishes.”
Everyone is welcome to attend and bring a dish to share, there will also be opportunities to perform.
“All we ask is that you bring along some food and share it with people. If you'd like to come and you want to do any performing or anything, if you could let me know, you can call into the office.”
Their office number is (306) 842-9081.
