The Calgary Police provided an update on the semi-truck rollover that caused 17 cows to be killed.
At roughly 8:10 p.m. on Tuesday night (Oct 22), Calgary Police were called to the scene of the rollover on Stoney Trail S.E and Macleod Trail S.E.
It occurred as the semi-truck was on the off-ramp from Stoney Trail to Macleod Trail S.E., and according to the Calgary Police media release, the driver failed to negotiate a curve and lost control of the vehicle.
Once the semi rolled over, it came to rest on the left-hand side of the road.
Of the approximately 95 cattle in the trailer that rolled over, 17 were killed.
The driver was brought to the hospital with minor injuries.
The Calgary Police, along with firefighters, RCMP, Highway Road crew members, cattle rustlers, and a veterinarian helped rescue the cattle from the overturned semi-trailer.
While they were rescuing the cattle, three cows escaped the trailer and proceeded to head to the south end of the Macleod Trail and Stoney Trail interchange, which caused a concern for the public's safety.
It took nearly two hours for those onsite to corral the runaway cattle and prevent any harm from happening to the public or the cows.
"This was a highly dynamic situation which required inter-agency collaboration to ensure the safety and well-being of the cattle and the public," said District 8 Acting Insp. Scott Neilson in a media release. "The swift response of all involved was crucial in managing this complex call and we are grateful for the support and professionalism demonstrated by everyone on the scene."
Other than the 17 cattle who were killed, the remaining livestock were rescued with no further injuries or property damage occurring.
Speed is being investigated as a factor, but currently, drugs and alcohol are not considered to be factors.
The investigation is still ongoing, and anyone with information of dashcam footage of the rollover is asked to contact the Calgary Police or Crime Stoppers.
