With Halloween just around the corner, the Airdrie RCMP is providing tips on how to have a safe and fun night.

Jennifer Weedmark, a Constable with the Airdrie RCMP explained they see a lot of pedestrian traffic during the day.

"We have a very large youth community. It's a very family-oriented city. So Halloween is always a really fun, busy evening."

She stated the RCMP will have members out on the roads saying hi to the kids and watching for traffic safety.

"We're looking forward to it this year and hoping the weather is nice for everyone."

Here are some tips the RCMP provided for residents to stay safe:

  • Check your child’s candy for any signs of tampering or unwrapped items before consumption.
  • Ensure costumes are bright, visible, and free of long trailing fabric to prevent tripping hazards.
  • Face paint allows for better visibility than a mask and reduces the risk of obstructing your child’s vision.
  • Only visit homes that are well-lit and welcoming to trick-or-treaters, and avoid houses that are dark and have no decorations. When visiting homes, respect properties by using proper accessways. Cutting across yards can not only ruin spooky decorations but cause damage to landscaping, fencing and lighting.
  • Remind your kids to look both ways before crossing the street, and to use sidewalks whenever possible. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic. Try and finish one side of the road and move on to the next instead of zig-zagging across the street.
  • Try to use main roadways for travel, as family-filled subdivisions will be busy and crowded with pedestrians. If you must travel throughout the evening, reduce your speed and be patient.
  • Always supervise young children while trick-or-treating, and consider going in groups for added safety.
  •  Airdrie Mounties will be patrolling to ensure everyone is safe while having fun. Please stop by and say hello to our officers and check out the police cars- you may even snag an extra treat!

"If any suspicious activities are going on, please report it as soon as possible. A delayed report will hinder our investigation."

Weedmark and the Airdrie RCMP wish everybody a happy Halloween!
