A fire early Monday morning has claimed the life of a cat and left two families without a place to live.

Shortly after 3:30 a.m., the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service was called to a two-storey home in the 400 block of Redwood Avenue.

The house was fully engulfed in flames when crews arrived and it had spread to a neighbouring home.

Firefighters fought the fire from outside, declaring it under control just over an hour later.

Most residents evacuated before crews arrived. Firefighters also temporarily evacuated some neighbouring homes as a precaution.

A search of both homes led firefighters to find one deceased cat.

No other injuries were reported.

Displaced residents found temporary accommodations through the City of Winnipeg's Emergency Social Services team.

Both homes sustained significant damage.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
