The world's longest network of multi-use recreational trails is looking to make a few upgrades.

The Trans Canada Trail (TCT) runs right across Canada, including all the provinces and territories.

The TCT also runs through Calgary and right through the 76 km High Rockies Trail in Kananaskis.

The High Rockies Trail connects Goat Creek at the Banff Park boundary to Elk Pass on the Alberta, B.C. border is the westernmost section of the trail in Alberta.

Over $5.3 million was given out last year between April 2023 and March 2024 and helped with many aspects of the trail.

  • Constructing new trail sections and access points

  • Repairing major damage

  • Building and improving active transportation infrastructure

  • Completing general trail maintenance like resurfacing, brush cutting, invasive species management

  • Environmental assessments, planning, design, public consultations and studies for trail work

  • Installing safety improvements like lighting, guard rails and accessibility measures

There are now over 600 local groups that manage and maintain the trail across the country.
