Halloween is right around the corner, which will draw all the ghouls and ghosts from their hiding spots.
With all the extra monsters, ghouls, goblins, ghosts, and superheroes on the street this week for Halloween, the Alberta RCMP are offering some tips to keep everyone safe.
While out trick-or-treating, it is advised to wear brightly coloured costumes and use with reflective tape, glow sticks, or a flashlight to be visible to drivers, and stay in well-lit areas.
If possible, wear makeup instead of a mask, because a mask may impair vision and hearing, but if a mask is the only option, the RCMP are suggesting removing it while walking between houses and crossing the street, to ensure the trick-or-treater is safe.
Just because there is candy and superheroes around, it's best to stick to sidewalks and off the roads, as well as only crossing the street when and where it's safe to do so, and don't crisscross back-and-forth across the road or in front of traffic.
On top of travelling in groups if the trick-or-treaters are unsupervised, the RCMP is asking trick-or-treaters to stay on the doorstep or sidewalk and never go inside a stranger's car or home.
For adults who are staying home to hand out candy, the cops are advising to keep porch lights or external security lights on and keep doors clear and accessible. as decorations can pose as a tripping hazard.
The police are also reminding adults to not invite children into the home and to only hand out commercially wrapped candy and snacks.
Because of the ghouls and ghosts going door to door, pets should be kept indoors so they don't become scared.
Once the candy has been collected, parents should rifle through the candy and look for signs of tampering or for unwrapped items.
And for anyone attending a Halloween party, don't drink and drive and don't take any substances from people you don't know or trust.
