As Halloween approaches, local authorities in Portage la Prairie are urging families to prioritize safety while celebrating. In a recent conversation with RCMP Constable Larry Neufeld, essential tips were shared to ensure that trick-or-treaters enjoy a safe and fun night.
With darkness setting in early on Halloween, Constable Neufeld advises parents to dress their children in bright costumes or reflective clothing.
"It's crucial for kids to be visible," he emphasized. Parents are encouraged to accompany younger children to help keep their excitement in check and ensure they do not run into traffic.
Neufeld recommends that families plan their trick-or-treating route carefully.
"Stick to one side of the street before crossing at intersections or crosswalks," he said. This approach not only promotes safety but also helps prevent accidents as children navigate from house to house.
In addition to traffic safety, candy safety is another important topic. Neufeld advises parents to inspect all treats before allowing children to indulge.
"We recommend waiting until you get home to eat any candy so parents can check it out first."
He also cautioned against entering homes while trick-or-treating, advising children to only accept treats from front doors.
Local schools are also playing a proactive role in Halloween safety. Doyle Moar, principal of Crescent View School, highlighted Manitoba Public Insurance and the school's initiative to provide flashing lights for students’ costumes.
"This helps ensure that they are seen when crossing roads."
Moar noted that the school hosts a Halloween parade and engages students in discussions about road safety, especially given the busy environment of the neighborhood.
With numerous vehicles and children in motion on Halloween night, the emphasis on safe practices while trick-or-treating is paramount. Moar encouraged children to respect others' property and practice good manners, such as thanking homeowners for treats.
As families prepare for a night of fun, the RCMP and local schools remind everyone to stay safe and have fun.
