If you have been looking for an extra hour of sleep, you will be getting it this weekend.
It’s that time of year again; Alberta clocks will turn back an hour early Sunday morning (Saturday night), as 2 a.m. becomes 1 a.m. That extra hour of sleep should help make up for the one we lost earlier in the year!
Airdrie's Fire Department (AFD) advises that while checking your household electronics clocks, take a moment to check your smoke alarms to ensure they’re working properly.
Deputy Chief of Fire Prevention and Public Education, James Kostuk, explained smoke alarms are a critical element in home fire safety.
"Smoke alarms need to be checked regularly. So if you have a smoke alarm with a non-replaceable 10-year battery, it's a good time to make sure your smoke alarm works and take a look at the date to see when it's going to be replaced."
If you have one where the battery is replaceable, Kostuk explained you want to replace it once a year.
"You don't want to wait for your alarm to start chirping, warning you that it's got a low battery."
He went on to talk about how the AFD is willing to help Airdronians check their smoke alarms if need be.
"If you're having difficulty with your smoke alarm, you can always call the fire department and we'll be glad to come to give you a hand. There are many different reasons why you may need help, but you can always start with the fire department as your first source."
He finished off by saying they are the first line of defence and that they save lives, so it is important to make sure they work if needed.
In 1916, Germany became the first nation to formally enact Daylight Saving Time.
In a 2021 referendum, Alberta did consider the option of permanently implementing Daylight Saving Time, but the majority of voters supported maintaining the current schedule. Of those who cast ballots, 50.2 per cent voted against it and 49.8 per cent supported it.
