Rocky Mountain House residents can rest assured the community art project, Rocco the Rocky Mountain Snake, will be kept safe over the winter months.

Rocco first appeared on a trail near Strawberry Hill in the spring, with a sign inviting residents and visitors to add a rock to see how far the painted serpent could travel, the town of Rocky Mountain House said on social media.

Since then, Rocco has grown to 907 stones and is 100 metres long.

With winter quickly approaching, the town’s parks department and volunteers relocated Rocco into storage on Oct. 24, to ensure the community creation is safe from snow-clearing equipment.

“Like all cold-climate serpents, Rocco is heading to a hibernaculum for the winter,” the town said. “All 907 pieces of art that make up this creative community creation will be carefully stored until spring when Rocco will emerge again to bask in the sun.”

The art project was launched anonymously and has brought residents and visitors together, adding their own paintings to Rocco.
