Golf Manitoba's Annual General Meeting and Awards Reception will be held tonight at the St. Charles Country Club in Winnipeg. The finalists for the 2024 Female Amateur Golfer of the Year award are Charmaine Hayden, Addison Kartusch, Jeri Lafleche and Rhonda Orr. The Male finalists are Zostrianos Giordani-Gross, Braxton Kuntz, Allan McDonald and Marco Trstenjak.
The Morden Thunder and Carman Cougars were winners in the Zone 4 High School Hockey League Monday night. Gavin Funk had two goals and two assists and Sam Hildebrand made 11 saves as the defending champion Thunder blanked the Garden Valley Zodiacs 7-0. Tyson Mullin, Vance Olson, Sawyer Leite, Alex Wieler and Mason Leite also scored for Morden. Grant Friesen scored his second goal of the game at 3:04 of overtime to lift the Cougars past the Pembina Tigers 3-2. Brayden Poirier had the other Carman goal. Carter Leslie and Dwight Sawatzky replied for the Tigers.
The Manitoba Junior Hockey League's Selkirk Steelers, Steinbach Pistons and Winkler Flyers are in the Canadian Junior Hockey League's Top 20 Rankings. The Steelers (12-3) moved up two spots from nine to seven. The Pistons (10-2-1) are up to nine from 12. The defending Turnbull Cup champion Flyers (9-4) dropped from 13 to 15. The Central Canada Hockey League's Rockland Nationals (13-0-1-0) remain the number one ranked team in the country.
The Winnipeg Jets season-opening eight-game win streak came to an end Monday night at Canada Life Centre. John Tavares scored three times in the Toronto Maple Leafs 6-4 victory over Winnipeg. Kyle Connor had two goals and two assists for the Jets who trailed 4-0 six minutes into the second period. Mark Scheifele and Gabriel Valardi also scored for Winnipeg.
Miller girls and Springfield boys won the Niverville Panthers varsity volleyball tournaments this past Saturday. The Aces defeated Gabrielle Roys 19-25, 25-23, 15-12 in the girls final. The Sabres swept the Rosenort Redhawks 25-19, 25-21 in the boys final. The Miami Marlins beat the Green Valley Pirates 26-24, 25-9 in the final of the Treherne Tigers junior varsity girls volleyball tournament. The Morden Thunder beat the MacGregor Mustangs 25-21, 25-20 in the final of the Carman Cougars Classic junior varsity girls volleyball tournament.
