This year Canada Post has issued two new stamps to commemorate and recognize the efforts of Canadians who helped during both world wars.
Both groups were instrumental in helping feed allied forces throughout the war efforts of both World War l and World War ll.
The farmerettes are recognized on one stamp. They were high school girls and women in Ontario that were recruited to work on farms between 1917 and 1918.
There was also a similar initiative during the second World War which recruited over 20,000 high school girls to help in the war effort.
The other stamp commemorates the Soldiers of the Soil. They were teenage boys that were recruited by the federal government in 1918 to work on farms.
They were heavily involved in the planting and harvesting of crops as well as tending livestock. At the end of the program, they were "honourably discharged" and awarded a bronze lapel badge.
