The smell of smoke in the region early this morning had many people wondering if there was some type of large fire in near the community. While there is a fire, it is no cause for concern as the city of Portage cleans up the tree disposal site located behind the Water Pollution Control Facility on the southeastern edge of the city.
Deputy fire chief Norm Vuignier says the department is well aware of the burn that is being monitored by city officials. While most of the trees taken to the site are recycled into woodchips, some pieces cannot be and when more space is needed, a controlled burn becomes neccessary.
"Conditions for the burn worked out perfect today. A light wind from the north is best when doing this."
Vuignier added the department would be ready if needed but there is no real concern for that. The burn is expected to continue until sometime in the afternoon.
