City says controlled fires expected to start on Wednesday

Controlled burns are scheduled to start, weather permitting, on Oct. 30 as part of the seasonal controlled burn program of natural areas. 

The City shared in a news release stating burns are expected to be conducted throughout the city until November 14. It will only take place when wind conditions are suitable and there will be appropriate fire guards in place. 

The City says in a news release, "Fire plays an important role in the preservation and restoration of prairies. Lack of fire allows weeds to invade these endangered plant communities."

Controlled burns have been conducted on tall grass prairies since 1986.
