The highly anticipated MNP Chili Challenge was back again this year, marking its 19th annual event after a brief hiatus due to COVID-19. Organized by MNP and featuring local businesses, this year’s challenge took place in support of Sprucedale Industries, a nonprofit organization based in Austin MacGregor area dedicated to providing work experience for individuals with disabilities across the region.
Hannah Brown, an articling accountant at MNP and one of the event's organizers, expressed excitement about the return of the event.
"We have seven contestants this year from various local businesses."
Attendees are invited to sample the different kinds of chili and vote for their favourite, granting bragging rights to the winners for the year. Brown highlighted the importance of community support. Local businesses contribute prizes for their silent and rainbow auctions, which helps keep this event going year after year.
Among the contestants was Kingston Daniels, a Grade 11 student representing Portage Colligate Institute (PCI). He shared that his foods class created a unique chili recipe featuring a sweet and smoky flavor profile, thanks to guidance from their teacher, Mrs. Elliott.
“We aimed for a balance of sweetness with cocoa and brown sugar being the secret ingredient." His enthusiasm was radiating as he remarked, “It feels good to help others and be part of this event.”
The Portage Fire Department, represented by L-P Nadeau, has participated in the chili challenge for four years. Nadeau shared that their team was using a tried-and-true recipe that had been well-received in previous years.
“If we win, we plan to make T-shirts declaring us the champions,” he joked, indicating a lighthearted competition spirit.
Travis Rintoul from RBC also returned for his second year at the event, emphasizing the collaborative spirit among local businesses.
“We’ve refined our recipe to enhance its flavor, and I believe it's even better than last year."
His chili featured hints of cinnamon, bringing a seasonal reminiscent of fall.
“Every chili here is fantastic, and ultimately, everyone wins because we’re raising money for a great cause,” he added.
As participants and community members sampled the diverse array of chilies and engaged in friendly competition, the atmosphere was filled with camaraderie and community spirit. In the end MNP raised $2,048.00 for Sprucedale Industries, and the Portage la Prairie Fire department took home their first ever win and are the 2024 Chili Challenge champions.
