With Halloween officially over, some local pigs would love to munch on your Halloween pumpkins when you want to get rid of them.

According to Kelly Worthington, co-owner of Whispering Winds Farms (just west of Didsbury), they will be happy to take your pumpkins rather than tossing them in the green bin.

Whispering Wind Farms is the second-largest Kunekune (which means fat and round in the Maori language) pig breeder in Canada.

An average Kunekune pig, when fully grown, will be anywhere from about 250 pounds to 400 pounds. Worthington said they're social animals and like human contact.

According to Worthington, they currently have around 200 pasture pigs.

"Pumpkins are their favourite treats; they can't get enough of them."

So, if you want the Kunkune pigs to enjoy munching on your leftover pumpkins, there are a few things to consider:

  • Take the candles out of the pumpkins (candles can be toxic for the animals)
  • Make sure there are no plastic elements or chemical paint on the pumpkin (food-grade paint is fine)

They also currently have a box set up for collection at The Farm Table in Carstairs, where Worthington picks up the pumpkins.
