The City of Portage la Prairie is evolving to meet changing needs, including adjustments to some of its committees. Mayor Sharilyn Knox explains that recent changes were discussed at the last council meeting.
"We’ve decided to dissolve a few committees and change the way we operate within the city," Knox said. "These include the Heritage Committee and the Public Art Committee. Over time, committees can complete their life cycle, and the purpose behind them changes. We are very grateful for everyone who dedicated time and effort to these committees over the years."
Past Contributions Worthy of High Regard
Knox noted that past projects have brought forward ideas to preserve heritage and enhance public art, which adds to Portage’s appeal. She added that City Council is thankful for those contributions.
"I especially need to mention James Kostuchuk for his work with the Heritage Committee. He puts his heart and soul into heritage and history, and we’re grateful for all the time he dedicated," Knox said. "But we’re moving forward. Engagement is incredibly important to us as a council, so we’re forming what we call ad hoc advisory groups."
She explained these groups aren’t formal committees but will serve as a database of interested residents whom the mayor and council can consult on specific projects.
"This is about getting the voices of our citizens to help us advance in these areas. The first, of course, is heritage. Some members of the previous committee will continue on, but we’re also seeking people with a passion for history. Maybe you want to ensure our community's history remains known, or perhaps you’re knowledgeable about Indigenous history in Portage," Knox said. "We want you on that list."
Committees Continue on As-Need Basis
Knox said the city would call on members on an as-needed basis to meet with council and support projects or engage in discussions.
"So, heritage is one area. Another is public art. A major public art project just happened at Simplot Central Park, which is fantastic. The sculpture by a Brandon artist was the last project of the Public Art Committee, and it’s wonderful art for Simplot Central Park," she said. "As we continue with beautification efforts and public art, we’ll reach out to the ad hoc committee. If this is your area of interest, sign up."
The mayor announced that the newest area needing members is the Accessibility Committee. Knox explained that as the city moves forward with projects like playgrounds, sidewalks, or transportation, accessibility needs to be prioritized.
"We want people with an interest or lived experience in accessibility to be voices for us, allowing us to ask questions, receive ideas, and discuss accessibility in our city," Knox said. "Those interested can visit the city’s website at https://city-plap.com to put their name on the committee lists. We look forward to working with people, and, as I mentioned, it’s an as-needed basis. You don’t need to attend a monthly meeting—we might consult you next month, or eight months from now, depending on the city’s agenda."
Knox noted that the Arts Committee also plays a role, especially when grants become available for Portage la Prairie that support murals, sculptures, and landscaping projects.
"These initiatives all contribute to beautification. But with public art, if we suddenly have the budget or available grants, we don’t want to make those decisions alone. We want to engage citizens and hear their opinions on where to direct those efforts," she said.
