Today it was announced that the City of Airdrie were the successful recipient of a $7,500 grant from FortisAlberta to aid in a lighting retrofit project at the Plainsmen Arena, completed this June.
Enhancing energy efficiency and advancing the city's sustainability objectives are the two main objectives of this project.
The retrofit project includes replacing the lighting fixtures that are already in place in the arena's lobby, ice resurfacer room, stairwells, restrooms, and security lights. Modern LED lighting systems, which are more resilient and energy-efficient, will take the place of the existing fluorescent lamps.
Deputy Mayor Heather Spearman is thankful for organizations like FortisAlberta that can help with projects like this.
"When we have third parties that generously chip in for these things, it makes a difference for us as a city, so we can focus on other projects, and it also allows for, people in our community, to be able to bond together over things. Now we have this space that's a lot safer, a lot more people are going to want to come here, and ultimately, it creates a healthier place for people, physically and mentally."
About 65 per cent less energy will be used by the new LED fixtures than by the old ones. The project will also include dimming capabilities and occupancy sensors to further cut down on energy use during off-peak hours while preserving efficiency and safety.
Leanne Kubiseski, Manager of Emerging Customer Solutions with FortisAlberta explained they are always happy to help the communities that they serve.
"We're proud to support our communities with their energy efficiency programs because it helps the community, but it also helps the grid, as we reduce energy demands and optimize our existing grid."
This $17,000 renovation is partially funded by a $7,500 grant from FortisAlberta's Save Energy community program.
