As Halloween night approaches, Airdrie residents can expect a chilly night for trick-or-treating. Temperatures will drop to around minus 10 degrees Celsius, which is chillier than previous Halloween nights in years past.

Danielle Desjardins with Environment and Climate Change noted that while tonight's forecast aligns closely with historical averages for this time of year, it is colder than in recent years. Over the past five years, the coldest recorded temperature on Halloween was minus 10.8 degrees in 2021.

In comparison, temperatures in 2023 and 2022 were slightly milder, reaching lows of minus 5.7 and minus 3.5 degrees, respectively. She noted that 2020 saw a more comfortable plus 1.6 degrees, while 2019 had a low of minus 4.7 degrees.

While residents may be relieved that there is no snow accumulation on the ground this Halloween, she highlighted the importance of bundling up, especially as the sun sets.

"It's going to feel quite a bit colder. The wind chill could make it feel minus 13 degrees this evening."

Looking ahead, snow is likely in the coming week, particularly with a weather system expected to affect the region on Tuesday.

"That’s going to be the best chance of snow, but I'm not seeing a huge snowfall event in the next week," she explained.

While long underwear may be a good idea to incorporate into one's Halloween outfit, there are plenty of safety tips tonight. According to the Mounties, they have some tips for a fun and secure evening tonight. Tips include:

  • Inspect candy: Carefully check treats for tampering or unwrapped items before letting kids enjoy them.
  • Costume safety: Ensure costumes are bright and visible, avoiding long fabrics to prevent tripping hazards.
  • Choose well-lit homes: Only visit houses with lights on and Halloween decorations, as they are generally more welcoming.
  • Respect property: Use walkways and avoid cutting across yards to protect decorations and prevent property damage.
  • Practice Street smarts: Remind children to look both ways, use sidewalks, and stay on one side of the street while travelling in groups.
