As election night in the United States approaches, the municipal office of Portage la Prairie is halfway through its four-year term, having been elected on October 25, 2022.
Waterworks Committee chair Faron Nicholls believes the current council has maintained an upward trajectory since taking office.
"I'm still very humbled to be here and to be in this position, and I feel like we're on the cusp of doing a lot of really good things around here," Nicholls explains. "I enjoy the group, along with the administration, who are so supportive."
While he acknowledges ongoing challenges in the waterworks department, Nicholls takes pride in the fact that Portage is home to the best-tasting drinking water in Western Canada, crediting the water treatment plant operators and support staff for this achievement.
He also highlights the Truth and Reconciliation events as a significant step forward for Portage. Nicholls is actively involved with Portage Regional Economic Development, the Fort la Reine Museum, and the Portage Regional Recreation Authority.
“I’d like to personally thank Portagers for their patience, their understanding, and their support,” Nicholls says. “The feedback is that it seems like we're making good moves for Portage. It's a group effort and council has been together making a multitude of what I think are solid decisions going forward.”
Nicholls hopes he and council can continue to complete worthwhile projects for Portage, including the accessibility upgrades at City Hall, which should be finished before the end of 2024.
