The City of Portage la Prairie has adopted a new approach this term by rotating the Deputy Mayor role, something common in other municipalities but new here. Mayor Sharilyn Knox explains that appointing a Deputy Mayor is her responsibility, and she opted for a rotational process.
“We divided our four-year term into eight-month segments, giving every councillor a chance to serve as deputy. The role involves two major responsibilities: representing myself and council when I’m unavailable, and chairing meetings,” says Knox.
This rotation allows councillors to develop governance skills, learn meeting leadership, and become more familiar with Robert’s Rules of Order.
Councillor Terrie Porter recently finished her term as Deputy Mayor, with Councillor Faron Nicholls taking over. Reflecting on her experience, Porter said, “I’m the third person to serve in this role after Ryan Espey and Preston Meier. I’ve been Deputy Mayor from March 1 to the end of October. I want to thank the mayor for implementing this. It’s been great. These eight months have helped each of us grow, not only professionally but personally.”
Porter notes that while a councillor’s role is important, the Deputy Mayor’s responsibilities add another level by filling in for the mayor as needed.
“We all stepped up a notch, attending events on her behalf and accompanying her at others. One highlight was travelling to Thompson for the AMF Caucus meeting, where we shared challenges and ideas in a close setting. I learned a lot,” she adds.
Porter says the experience pushed her out of her comfort zone, as she brought greetings on behalf of Mayor Knox at events like the Vintage Car Show.
Next in the Deputy Mayor role is Councillor Faron Nicholls, who says he’s honoured to serve.
“It’s very humbling to be a city councillor in Portage la Prairie. Mayor Knox set up a rotation, and I’m truly humbled to act on her behalf. My colleagues have done a splendid job, and I hope to continue that. I’m looking forward to representing her at upcoming celebrations and ceremonies,” Nicholls says.
