Yesterday, a small fire broke out at the GFL Environmental building in the city's northeast (42 East Lake Circle NE) while the business was open and occupied.

Airdrie Fire Department responded swiftly, deploying 16 firefighters and six fire units.

Crews used dry chemical extinguishers to bring the fire under control and later applied water to ensure the blaze was fully extinguished. All employees were safely evacuated before firefighters arrived, and no injuries were reported.

The fire was identified as a hydrocarbon fire that started in a 14-inch pipe joining two large, empty vessels. During the decommissioning of the vessels, hydrocarbon residue was inadvertently ignited.

The Airdrie Fire Prevention Bureau is continuing its investigation into the incident.
