The Winkler Flyers dropped a 3-1 decision to the Portage Terriers Sunday afternoon at Stride Place. Nicholas Mckee had the lone goal for the defending Turnbull Cup champions who have lost three of their last four games.
Austin Spicer scored his second goal of the game 3:08 into overtime to lift Pembina Valley past the Transcona Railer Express 4-3. Ty Sadowski and Slade Sotheran also scored for the Twisters who snapped their 10-game losing skid.
Ryler Gates made 22 saves and the Pembina Valley Hawks defeated the Norman Northstars 4-2. Gavin Rondeau, Adrien McIntosh, Tegan Fehr and Carson Hiebert did the goal scoring for the Hawks.
Team Manitoba lost its preliminary round opener 4-3 to British Columbia at the 2024 U18 Women's National Hockey Championship in Quispamsis, New Brunswick. Linnea Misner of Cooks Creek, Jessica Anderson of Roland and Rio Pierre of Winnipeg scored for Manitoba. Elyse Denbow of Plumas made 33 saves. Team Manitoba's next game is today (11 a.m.) against Quebec.
The Winkler Royals and Portage Islanders were winners in the South Eastern Manitoba Hockey League Sunday night. Aaron Lewadniuk scored twice and Matthew Thiessen made 51 saves as Winkler downed Carman 3-1. Mitch Dyck also scored for the Royals. Mikol Sartor had the lone goal for the Beavers. Jared Roy scored twice and Brock Trotter had a goal and three assists as Portage beat Red River 5-3. Riley Borody and Jayson Brooks had the other Islanders goals. Gavin Froese, Justin Baudry and Jared Magne replied for the Wild. Portage netminder Jacob Gnidziejko stopped 58 shots.
The Winnipeg Jets scored four third period goals en route to a 7-4 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning at Canada Life Centre. Dylan Samberg scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period. Nikolaj Ehlers and Cole Perfetti added empty net goals. Mark Scheifele, Logan Stanley Vladislav Namestnikov and Alex Iafallo also scored for the Jets who have won 11 of their first 12 games. Connor Hellebuyck made 26 saves.
