Q. Why are you running for council?
A. I believe we all should provide some kind of community service. I have a long history of volunteering. While I have backed off with a lot of my commitments, I am still interested in the workings of the city and look forward to the challenge of improving the great city we all call home.
Q. Do you have experience in public service/community boards/politics?
A. I have been a member of the Moose Jaw Elks #7 for 20 years and was Exalted Ruler for 10 years. I served on the Moose Jaw and District Chamber of Commerce for a full 6-year term. I am currently a board member with Community Futures South Central and will finish a 9-year term. I have no hard experience with politics besides running for mayor of Moose Jaw in 2021.
Q. Do you think experience matters one way or another?
A. Experience would definitely be an asset, but my feeling is you never stop learning so you must just get started. I expect a steep learning curve as to the inner workings of city hall.
Q. What topic/policy issue/incident was the tipping point for you?
A. A tipping point for me would be the increase in visibility of people obviously affected by drugs. I see more unacceptable behavior, litter and vandalism than ever. I would like a better explanation as to why the housing project at the old Union hospital site wasn't pursued more. At the risk of sounding like a stuck record, why does the road work take so long?
Q. What criticisms do you have, if any, for the politics you've seen over the last two or three years?
A. As mentioned previously, I don't have experience with city politics, so I am hesitant to criticize.
Q. What is your plan to compromise/cooperate with fellow council members to accomplish policy goals?
A. My plan regarding my fellow councilors is to communicate and cooperate. If policy does not go my way, I will have to accept it and continue working with what we have.
Q. What else do you want voters to know about you?
A. I don't miss a lot of meetings. It doesn't matter how good you are if you're not there to do the work.
Q. In the interests of transparency, are you coordinating or do you share an association with any other candidates, in any way whatsoever?
A. I know a lot of my fellow candidates and of course we do communicate with each other in the interest of learning and fellowship.
