A new social sports league is making its way into Portage la Prairie, as The Portage Cornhole Club prepares to host its first tournament this month. The event, taking place on November 23 in the Glesby Center, marks the beginning of a winter series that aims to keep the popular backyard game alive throughout the colder months.

The idea for the club was born out of a summer tournament held by Colin Doyle, the local club director, at the campground where he spends his summers. What was expected to be a small gathering of 10 to 15 teams quickly expanded to 32 teams, a sign of the growing interest in cornhole in the community.

"It's a game that we played every weekend, and we just didn't want to let it go once winter hit," said Doyle, who co-founded the club with fellow director Brian Bird.

The tournament is set to kick off at noon on November 23, will feature a $50 entry fee per team, with cash prizes for both the A-side and B-side winners. Bar service will also be available to participants and spectators. Doyle shared his hopes for the club's future, stating that they plan to hold monthly tournaments from November through April, with a break in December for the holiday season.

"We're partnering with the American Cornhole League, so players will start developing rankings, and future tournaments will be tailored to skill levels."

The club is open to players of all ages and skill levels, with Doyle emphasizing that cornhole is a low-impact game that can be enjoyed by everyone, from children to seniors.
