Advent calendars are typically used to count down the days of Christmas with a gift each day.

Watrous is taking the opposite approach to help their local food bank by issuing a friendly challenge to the community.

Instead of receiving a gift, residents are asked to collect a different item each day to fill up a donation box.

Recreation Coordinator Chelsea Murfitt felt a reverse Advent Calendar would go well with a Christmas theme.

“Just trying to help out with the food bank who may need it during the Christmas holidays.”

A full list of the calendar can be found on the Town of Watrous Facebook page, Murfitt noted some of the items that they will be looking for includes the typical items that are a part of Christmas dinners including stuffing and gravy, along with other things including shampoo and laundry detergent.

If there is an item on the list that you’re not able to locate, you’re welcome to replace it with a different item. Murfitt added that she added some extra items that people can use as a replacement for things that they can’t find for the donation box.

Food banks across the province are dealing with the increased usage, especially during Christmas, and Murfitt said Watrous is one community that’s dealing with that issue.

On Wednesday, December 4, residents can drop off their donation boxes to the Watrous Food Bank between 9:00-11:00 am
