Update:

A press release has announced that the Trans-Canada highway is now open by St. Francois Xavier is back open, after a collision earlier today.

Original Story:

Ice is being blamed for an accident on the Trans-Canada highway 60 kilometers east of Portage this morning. The accident happened on the bridge over the Assiniboine River near the white horse statue at St. Francois Xavier.

Eastbound lanes (lanes going toward Winnipeg) were closed most of the day due to the accident but reopened just after 5 p.m.

Sources from Emergency Services in the area say it was a semi-trailer and truck collision with the trailer ending up submerged in the river below. Parties from the vehicles were transported to hospital but those are the only details that were available.

No other information is available at this time.

The bridge is very close to the intersection highlighted by the Reeve in the area earlier this year due to his safety concerns.

The latest road report is available here.
