The 2024 Charity Classic hockey game, featuring the Winkler Flyers against the Winkler Fire Department, is set to take place on November 24th at the Icon Arena. This annual tradition brings out the best in the community, blending spirited competition and charity for a worthy cause, with proceeds going to the Winkler and District Christmas Cheer Board.

A charitable tradition for a worthy cause

Rick Schroeder of the Winkler Fire Department explained the motivation behind the event, noting that it is much more than a hockey game. “It’s a fun charity that we put on for [the Christmas Cheer Board],” he said. “It brings out everybody, and we keep the cost down. There’s also potential to raise money with 50/50 prizes, just to help families in need within our community.”

For the past four years, the game has raised over $30,000 for the Cheer Board, providing holiday assistance to families in need. The game has a reputation for its friendly competition, with lighthearted moments and some occasional friendly “chirping” among players.

Flyers players reflect on the game’s unique atmosphere

Kam "KT" Thomas, a Winkler native and Flyers player, shared his enthusiasm about participating in his first Charity Classic. “It’s awesome…just the general feeling of being relaxed going into it, knowing you’re going to have a good time and have fun,” he said. He highlighted how the game stands apart from typical matches, giving the community an opportunity to see the Flyers in a more relaxed and playful setting.

Jayce “Ace” Legaarden, another Flyers player, expressed his appreciation for the local support. “It’s pretty cool to see a game that means a lot to us, just to give back to the community because they give so much for us,” he said. Legaarden mentioned that while there’s some joking and lightheartedness, the event holds an important place in the hearts of both the players and the fans.

Game details and community spirit

This year’s Charity Classic will begin at 4:00 PM, with a $2 admission fee. The puck drops at 4:30 PM, and attendees can expect exciting prizes, including a signed Winnipeg Jets jersey, donated by the Jets themselves, and golf passes from the Winkler Golf Course. Rick Schroeder added, “Last year, the 50/50 got pretty high too, so there’s lots of opportunity to win!”

The Winkler Flyers will also be welcoming some special guests from the Morden Fire Department and bringing back several 20-year-olds who have previously participated, adding even more excitement to this year’s lineup.

Supporting the Winkler Christmas Cheer Board

Schroeder emphasized how important community events are for bringing people together and supporting causes like the Winkler Christmas Cheer Board. “It’s just…bringing everybody together—firefighters, Flyers, the community—to support a good cause,” he said. The Fire Department also participates in the Cheer Board’s Holly Jolly Breakfast, showing their commitment to the community beyond the rink.

Join the Winkler Flyers, Winkler Fire Department, and the community at the 2024 Charity Classic for an evening filled with hockey, humor, and holiday spirit—all for a cause that truly matters.
