This Sunday a family of Airdronians are hosting a turkey/food drive for the Veterans Food Bank in Calgary.
Rachel Lees and her daughter Beth-Anne have been doing the food driver for four years, this being the fifth. Lees explained that it was her daughter's idea to do the food drive.
"She decided in grade one that she wanted to help the veterans and that they shouldn't be struggling." They should be able to get all the same things that we can afford. Especially food-wise."
Lees explained that the event started small but eventually got bigger and bigger each year.
"We did our own drop off of groceries to the food bank. Then, the following year, COVID hit, and so we didn't do anything. But then in 2021, we asked friends and neighbours if they could donate."
The year after, she wanted to fill their vehicle and did just that, and now Beth-Anne wants to fill a U-Haul trailer. They will be at 1400 Market Street from 2-5 p.m. with a trailer, as their goal is to hopefully fill it up.
When asked about how it makes her feel that her daughter wants to help veterans in need, she explained it's an amazing feeling.
"You know that you've done something right when she wants to help out veterans."
Lees went on to explain they do this food drive around this time of year because Remembrance Day is on Monday.
"They should be remembered all year round, but the specific day just makes it a little bit more special. They fought for our freedom, and they should be honoured."
After the food drive, they will drop everything off at the Veterans Food Bank in Calgary the day after (Remembrance Day) so it will be ready for veterans in need.
This Saturday is Airdrie's Remembrance Day Ceremony, it is taking place at Genesis Place and starts at 10:20 a.m. There will also be a small ceremony at the Cenotaph shortly after.
