Rocky View County (RVC) is partaking in the CleanFarms contest to help recycle twine. The program started at the beginning of the month and will last until May 31.

Shane Hedderson, the Director for Western Canada at CleanFarms, explained what it is all about.

"We've been operating a collection program for grain bags and plastic baler twine Since 2019 across the province. We were looking for ways to not only increase the awareness of the program and the fact that  you can recycle your plastic baler twine, but we also found a way to help return some benefit to the ag industry in the course of the project."

He went on to talk about why it's important to make sure twine does get recycled.

"We hear about plastic twine getting ground up in the feed for the animals or getting caught up in fence lines and things like that. So it's really important, just from a safety and environmental safety perspective, to manage this material properly."

According to Hedderson, RVC is one of the counties that have put a large amount of effort into the program since 2019.

Those that partake how the chance to win up to $12,000 in total cash prizes. All of RVC's five transfer sites (Brag Creek, Airdrie, Langdon, Iricanna, Spring Hill) have the bags needed to collect the twine.

"Since the program began in 2019 that county has accounted for about 6 per cent of all the twine in the province."

"A lot of this twine is generated over the winter months when feeding is done inside cows and other livestock aren't grazing. So we wanted to give everybody lots of time to hear about the initiative, that is why it is running until May."

RVC hopes plenty of residents are willing to take part in the initiative.
