In 2023, Cochrane RCMP members investigated nearly 900 incidents of family violence.

Insp. Dave Brunner says that as part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, their goal is to educate and inform the community about the harsh realities of domestic violence.

"So what we want to do is promote stable bonds between parents and children, foster safe relationships between intimate partners and support mental health and resilience in everyone."

Big Hill Haven offers vital outreach services to those in abusive relationships, providing risk assessments, safety planning, and emergency shelter for those in immediate danger. The group offers a lifeline to anyone contemplating leaving an unsafe relationship or needing support while navigating their situation.

Wanda McGinnis, executive director of Big Hill Haven says in 2022 they supported about 1200 nights of shelter space and approximately 62 people in their outreach program. But that number grew significantly in 2023.

"We supported over 2000 nights of shelter and 82 people in our outreach program. This year, we're on track to meet that 2000 nights of shelter and seven months into our reporting period, we're already at 89 outreach clients. So we're definitely seeing an upward trajectory in the number of people that are reaching out."

The growing demand for Big Hill Haven's services is a reflection of the increasing awareness around domestic violence in Cochrane.

"We want the community to know we're here. This month's theme is Where to Turn. So it's really important to us that everybody knows that Big Hill Haven is a place you can turn to and you can give us a call at 403-796-6564."

"We want to make sure everyone in Cochrane knows that we're here. We're not here to judge you. We're here to support you."

As part of this month’s awareness campaign, McGinnis is encouraging residents to wear purple ribbons, starting November 12, as a sign of solidarity with those affected by family violence.

"One in three women are going to face family violence in their lifetime in this country. So we really do need to take some big steps. One other thing, Big Hill Haven is able to support all gendered people. So while we appreciate domestic violence disproportionately affects women, we're here to support everyone."
