As we head into Remembrance Day one Winnipeg school is reflecting on its commitment to peace and sharing it with the community.
"We always do this just before Remembrance Day or right around the time we talk about the school's commitment to peace as part of our Mennonite values of the school, said Judson Rempel, director of community relations and marketing at Winnipeg Mennonite School. "This year, we're doing something extra, taking that internal commitment to peace and making it public by installing a peace pole."
The Peace Pole is an internationally recognized symbol with the words 'May Peace Prevail on Earth' in different languages on each of its four or six sides. Each campus will have a pole that reflects the languages of the community and area.
"At the Katherine Friesen campus, by the University of Manitoba. We have a good number of languages, including some from Africa and Asia," said Judson. "At our other campus in the St. James area, we have a bunch of Indigenous languages because our school there has a commitment to the Indigenous community."
Judson says the poles have been set up in front of each campus.
"If you walk by the school, you will see the post right up front," said Judson. "We will also eventually have an information plaque about the pole. We are also planning on planting a tree from back in the colonies in Ukraine."
He encourages Winnipeggers to stop by and check out the poles.
Winnipeg Mennonite School has two K-8 campuses in the city at 250 Bedson Ave. and 26 Agasiz Dr.
