As the southwet begins to see the first signs of winter, it's an ideal time to remind Swift Current residents about the Community Fridge and it's significance to the community.
With so many families and community members struggling, the Community Fridge has been a huge success since it's inception over a year ago.
Lindsey Wilk, co-founder of the Community Fridge, underscored that they accept non-perishable foods, boxed and canned foods, frozen meals, and personal and hygiene items.
"Usually needs fluctuate throughout the year but around holiday time, getting close to Christmas, the needs are always higher," shared Wilk. "So we just encourage people to donate on a regular basis if they're able to."
Any donations made are requested to be within the best before or expiry date and homemade meals should be prepared in a food-safe kitchen.
"The Community Fridge is meant as a supplemental resource to kind of fill in the gaps of other services," she said. "It's meant to be accesible, as there's no hours of operation,
"It's available to everbody and it removes a factor of shame because you don't need to talk to anybody when accessing the fridge."
The Community Fridge is located in a vibrantly coloured shed in the parking lot south of Great Plains College at the corner of Second Avenue North East and Cheadle Street East.
"If anyone has questions, never hesitate to reach out to Keelan or myself," Wilk concluded. "We're always happy to answer questions or foster a conversation around food insecurity in our community."
