The Carman Cougars and Garden Valley Zodiacs were winners in the Zone 4 High School Hockey League Friday night. Grant Friesen had a goal and three assists and Carson O’Connor made 17 saves as the Cougars blanked the Miller Aces 6-0. Joel Friesen scored 56 seconds into overtime to lift the Zodiacs past the Mountain Mustangs 3-2.
Liam Ernst made 21 saves in the Winkler Flyers 6-0 victory over the Winnipeg Blues. Brady Craik scored twice for the defending Turnbull Cup champions while the rest went to Blake Matheson, Will Lyons, Nicholas Mckee and Isaiah Peters.
The Pembina Valley Twisters dropped a 7-1 decision to Raiders. Josh Guilford had the lone goal for the Twisters who trailed 4-0 before the 14-minute mark of the first period.
The Pembina Valley Hawks gave up three goals in the first period and four in the middle frame and lost 8-2 to the Winnipeg Thrashers. Tegan Fehr and Haiden Friesen did the goal scoring for the Hawks.
Team Manitoba fell 8-6 to Team Atlantic in the 7th place game at the 2024 U18 Women’s National Hockey Championship in Quispamsis, New Brunswick. La Salle’s Kate Manness had three assists for Team Manitoba.
Joby Baumuller had two goals and an assist, and the Brandon Wheat Kings beat the Pats 5-3 in Regina. Caleb Hadland, Carter Klippenstein and Matteo Michels also scored for the Wheat Kings who are riding a six-game points streak.
The Winnipeg Jets wrap up their four-game homestand today (2 p.m.) when they meet the Dallas Stars at Canada Life Centre. The Jets have won 13 of their first 14 games.
Chloe Primerano scored the shootout winner as Canada's National Women's Hockey Team defeated the United States 5-4 in the second game of the Rivalry Series in West Valley City, Utah. Laura Stacey had a pair of goals in regulation while Emma Maltais and Marie-Philip Poulin with a shorthanded effort also scored for the Canadians. Game three goes Sunday in Boise, Idaho.
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers host the Saskatchewan Roughriders today in the CFL’s West Division final. The opening kick-off at Princess Auto Stadium is 5:30 p.m. The Bombers have made four changes on defense. On are safety Brandon Alexander, defensive end Celestin Haba, defensive back Nick Taylor and linebacker Kyrie Wilson. Wilson is a game-time decision. Winnipeg has won its last five home division finals (2023, 2022, 2021, 2011 & 2001).
Ryan Wiebe, Shaela Hayward, Ty Dilello and Jennifer Clark-Rouire will meet Owen Purcell of Nova Scotia in the semifinals at the Canadian Mixed Curling Championship in St. Catharines, Ontario. The Manitoba champions lost a pair of games Friday and finished in third place in the Championship Pool. Team Wiebe fell 9-2 to Purcell and 6-5 to Jason Ackerman of Saskatchewan. Ackerman will face Kurt Balderston of Alberta in the other semifinal.
