Memorial Park was filled with those honouring the soldiers who have served Canada today, Nov. 11, 2024.

People of various ages and backgrounds were all present as the bagpipes played their mournful sorrow. Remembering the fallen who gave everything to help ensure Canada would remain a free nation.

In fact, this was the largest crowd the Cenotaph has had in recent memory, which combined with its largest laying of wreaths that John Griffin, media spokesperson for the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 56, can remember as well.

"It's great to see that people are not only coming out to remember our veterans but also participating by having a wreath laid," said Griffin.

While extremities may have been cold, hearts were warmed as families laid their wreaths at the foot of the cenotaph, joined by local, provincial and federal government representatives, businesses, and groups.

"That's probably the biggest crowd we've had at a cenotaph service in recent memory," confirmed Griffin. "I'd just like to thank everyone for coming out today or this morning and all those who laid a wreath."

Afterwards, people were able to place their poppies in amongst the wreaths, as well as their other tributes.

From there, many went back to the Legion Hall to enjoy refreshments before heading to the Swift Current Comprehensive High School for the service held at 10:50 a.m.
