The annual Endow Manitoba Giving Challenge, which invites communities across the province to maximize their donations, kicked off today, November 12, and will run until November 17. This unique challenge provides an opportunity for residents in participating communities, including Winkler, to double their contributions toward impactful local projects.

Doubling Donations: A Community Effort

The Winkler Community Foundation is taking part in this provincial initiative, encouraging local residents to give to the foundation’s general fund, which supports grants benefiting the community. "Thanks to our incredibly generous business community, every dollar our residents contribute is matched by 14 local businesses, the Manitoba government, and Endow Manitoba," shared Barb Neufeld, chair of the Winkler Community Foundation. "This challenge has allowed us to stretch funds further and support projects that benefit our entire community."

Through the Giving Challenge, all donations up to $32,000 will be doubled by matching funds from these sources, potentially yielding a total of $64,000.

Supporting Local Projects with Long-Term Impact

Funds raised during the Giving Challenge will be invested in the foundation’s general fund, with the investment returns distributed as grants to various programs and initiatives. Myra Peters, executive director of the Winkler Community Foundation, noted the ongoing benefits of these grants, saying, "These grants support programs that have a lasting impact—initiatives like the Reinfeld Park, Central Station, Winkler Food Cupboard, and Pembina Valley Counseling."

Increasing community participation

In addition to raising funds, the Winkler Community Foundation aims to grow its donor base this year. "We've led the province in donation amounts for the past two years, but we want to increase our donor base," Neufeld emphasized. "Even a small donation of $5 or $10 helps us reach our goal. We want everyone to feel they’re part of the impact we’re making."

Contributing to lasting change

The foundation’s investment-based approach ensures that donations made during the challenge create lasting benefits for the community. Peters added, "What’s wonderful about these funds is that they’re invested, and only the return on the investment is spent. This allows us to give back to the community every year, sustaining support for various programs indefinitely."

How to participate

To double donations during this challenge, residents can visit the Winkler Community Foundation’s website and select the "Donate Now" button, or stop by their office at 288 15th St. for in-person donations.

Neufeld closed by encouraging widespread participation: "Whether you're a regular donor or it’s your first time, please consider giving during this challenge week. Every dollar you give directly supports programs that help make Winkler a stronger, more vibrant place for everyone."
