One man’s trash could be an animal’s treasure this fall as the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation is turning old hunting and fishing equipment into habitat land.
Director of Habitat Lands Darren Newberry says every year, the SWF collects old hunting blinds, clothing, fishing tackles, rods, reels and hooks, auctions them off, and uses the funds to purchase habitat lands for wildlife.
“So, we take this stuff, we itemize it, and then we have different fund-raising events. We do an online auction, we have our annual convention, and then the stuff gets auctioned off there…We take the funds that are gained from that, and we buy habitat in the province of Saskatchewan, so it’s beneficial for everyone.”
The SWF has raised over $300,000 to date through the program, allowing them to acquire about 2,500 acres of wildlife habitat per year.
Those who donate can get a charitable tax receipt for the amount their items were sold for.
If you have any old equipment you wish to donate, you can call the SWF, who will arrange for one of their members to come pick it up from your house.
