More details about what happened in the fatal rollover on Main Street North have been released by the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT).
On Friday at about 12:33 a.m., SIRT was notified by the Moose Jaw Police Service regarding the accident that involved the police. SIRT’s Civilian Executive Director accepted the notification and has directed an investigation.
According to SIRT, the MJPS received a call around 11:42 p.m. on Friday of a silver Honda driving erratically and chasing the caller’s vehicle. The caller told the police that there was a previous physical altercation.
At around 11:47 p.m., a member of the MJPS saw the vehicle heading northbound on Main Street at a high rate of speed.
The officer followed the vehicle with his sirens activated at 11:48 p.m. and radioed that the Honda had crashed.
EMS was requested to attend the scene and one of the vehicle’s passengers, a 31-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and a second passenger were taken to hospital for assessment and treatment.
The SIRT team, consisting of the Civilian Executive Director and six SIRT investigators will examine the actions of the police during the incident. The MJPS will remain responsible for investigation into the actions of the driver.
No further information is being released at this time. A final report will be issued to the public within 90 days of the investigation ending.
