After weeks of preparation, it’s almost showtime for the Humboldt Collegiate Institute (HCI) Drama Department, as they will be performing Roald Dahl’s Matilda, the musical, at the end of the month with a couple of performances beginning on Friday, November 29.
Brittany Petit, a teacher at HCI says the students have been working on the musical over the last two months.
“We’re down now to practicing every single day, running lines and doing set designs.”
There are at least 30 students with the musical, as Petit noted that a design studies class at the school is helping create the set.
For the second straight year, the HCI Drama Department will be performing a musical, after last year’s presentation, the Addams Family.
This year’s performance of Matilda will be a modern spin of the 1988 novel by Roald Dahl, according to Petit.
“Miss Trunchball is this real mean strict teacher, and Matilda (Woomword) is just this brilliant daughter who is undermined by her parents, they call her all sorts of names because she likes to read books.”
Petit added, “Mr. Wormwood is that sleazy salesman and his wife is only concerned with her and her looks, and they couldn’t care less that their daughter is brilliant and as she enters school, she’s one of the only one that can read, and write, and spell, and do math.”
There will be three showings of the musical at the HCI Commons. The first performance will be on Friday, November 29 at 7pm. There will be two shows on Saturday at 2 & 7.
The main sponsor for the production is the Humboldt Broncos Memorial Golf Tournament along with RBC and Home Hardware.
Tickets are available at Shoppers Drug Mart from November 1-28, along with tickets available at the door, they are $20 for adults and $10 for students.
