The Winnipeg Humane Society is reminding Winnipeggers that they remain in an intake freeze after a box of kittens was left on their doorstep Tuesday morning.

"They were warm, with a bed and a piece of bread in the box with them – someone tried to keep them safe, and this was likely all they had to offer," said the WHS in a post on Facebook.

The shelter reached critical capacity in August after 130 dogs were brought into care. They have been in an intake freeze since then.

"While we are still on an intake freeze, we do have programs helping keep families together," said the WHS. "Our pet food bank is stocked for our community – please reach out to our team if you need help caring for your pets."

The Winnipeg Humane Society says, that despite this recent drop-off, they currently do not require fosters.

Anyone interested in helping is encouraged to donate to the pet food bank or the many other programs offered through the Winnipeg Humane Society.

This year, investigations and emergency response have brought 678 animals to the WHS, not including the 68 Maltese removed by the City of Winnipeg Animal Services.
