Multiple residents who live in the Airdrie-Banff Constituency were honoured today, as 19 people received the King Charles III Coronation Medals.

Blake Richards, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Airdrie Banff, explained these medals are awarded to Albertans who are local leaders in community service.

"We put out the call for nominations for the 20 medals that we had available to us, and we received a lot."

While Richards only had 20 medals to give out, he acknowledged the fact that there are plenty more amazing community service leaders who live in the Airdrie-Banff area who were nominated and also deserve them.

"I know there were over 100 people who were nominated, each one of them could have been an outstanding recipient. I'm sure there are many more people throughout the communities that deserve them as well."

Here is a list of the medal recipients from this afternoon:

  • Shawnee Hoffman (Airdrie)
  • Adam Waterous (Bow Valley)
  • William (Bill) Martin (Airdrie)

Airdronian Dave Maffitt is honoured to have been one of the Airdronians who received a medal. Maffitt is known for his role with Volunteer Airdrie while also coaching basketball in Airdrie and Calgary.

"I didn't know there were so many nominations for the award, and the fact that I was chosen makes it even more special."

Maffitt also shared that since moving to Airdrie in 2006, he has spent a lot of time getting to know people in the city and hasn't regretted it one bit.

"It's just been a great community, and it's provided us with opportunities to get involved and meet people. I think it's probably the best city in Canada to be living in."

There is still one more medal to be awarded and the final recipient will be revealed closer to Christmas with a special event planned.
