Estevan residents have elected a new city council, re-electing Shelley Veroba for a third term. Veroba, who received the highest vote count among councillors, expressed gratitude for the strong voter turnout and said she is eager to continue bringing residents' voices to council chambers.
Veroba noted her excitement about returning to the role and pointed to the continuity with fellow returning councillors Kirsten Walliser and Brian Johnson, along with new councillors Matthew Dubowski, Tom Mauss and Dave Elliot. Anthony Sernick, who previously served on Council for four years, was elected as Estevan's new mayor.
Veroba also commented on the high public interest in the local election, citing strong voter turnout.
“A lot of people came out to vote, and that was clear when you drove by the Church of God or the fire station, seeing cars lined up down the street,” Veroba said. “Suds also had a busy day. I was concerned because I’d heard not many people voted in the advance polls, especially with the provincial election so close. But it was phenomenal to see this many people come out, so thank you to everyone who put their support behind me.”
Veroba received 2,175 votes, the highest count among councillors, which she attributes to her straightforward communication style.
“One of my biggest messages is to bring the people’s voice to council chambers,” Veroba said. “I’ve always been open and honest with people over my last eight years on council, and I think people appreciate that. I don’t use a lot of jargon; I just say it how it needs to be said.”
Veroba expressed gratitude to her supporters. “Thank you very much for putting your support behind me. I hope I can represent you and the city of Estevan well over the next four years as I have in the last eight. I value and appreciate the support,” she said.
The official tally of votes will be released by the City of Estevan later today.
