A four-term town councillor in Gull Lake is now the town's mayor as of Thursday morning.
Nasser Zanidean obtained 212 votes beating another former councillor Dennis Kirk who received 144 votes.
"It was a tough go, I figured it was going to go either way," he said. "I honestly wasn't 100 per cent sure how it was going to turn out."
Zanidean believes his willingness to speak with a lot of Gull Lake residents in the past month while on the election campaign trail played a factor in his election victory.
"The biggest thing (I heard) was, a lot of them would like to be kept in the loop with what's going on and decisions being made," he said.
The oil industry employee said the biggest infrastructure project for the town is already in the works. Last term they began work on a water well that he believes when complete could cost in total around $500,000.
"We're just hoping we can get to the completion of that and have it up and running here in the next little while," he said. "It's huge for us."
Incumbents Terry Stevenson, Tyson Migneault, and Steve Haithwaite were all re-elected.
New faces at the council table include Karen Turton, Neal Boutin, and Brandon Wessner.
Zanidean is familiar with all six councillors and is looking forward to forming a team over the next four years.
"Three of them of returning and there a few news ones, I've known them for quite a while as well - never worked side-by-side with them like the new councillors but the rest of them I've worked with for a couple of terms," he said.
Gull Lake's first council meeting is set for November 27 at 7 p.m.
