A peaceful demonstration is being staged this Sunday, Nov. 17 at 4 p.m. to preserve Wetland 80 in The Willows community.

Residents of the River Heights remain concern over the future of the wetland they say remains a thriving and essential wildlife corridor.

"I'm trying to garner as much attention to the fact that these wetlands are being filled in without proper consideration for the wildlife or the people who surround the wetlands," says Sharon Olliffe. "This is a valuable wildlife corridor."

She says several people were attracting to buying homes there because of the wetland they were told would be left untouched. Some, she says, even paid more for their lots in close proximity to the wetland.  She says some of these residents have since sold their homes and moved on.

"People holding signs, showing signs, just a show of solidarity for this wetland that we're trying to save from being bulldozed over."

A group photo will be taken to illustrate the concern people have over its demise.

She says its destruction is in contravention of the town's wetlands policy.

"That's a 42-page document and all it speaks about is how wetlands are to both communities and wildlife, and I just thought this is so contrary to what's happening in council chambers."
